Hybrid Garden is in the Ground!
At long last, our seeds have met the ground! We started out with raised row beds, but because it was too labor intensive this late in the game, we switched to traditional tilled soil gardening. Clint graciously let me stand in the middle of the plot, hold the seeds, and bark out orders about what to plant where…He’s a good man. 🙂
Oh, did you want to water that garden?
How are you going to water it??!? No rain in the forecast until Monday.
Guess we’ll have to ladle it out of this here pond-ditch. Clint mowed us a path down to the water, and then laid a piece of leftover wood atop the mud so he could bail the water out by the bucketful. (Note to self: Call the water company about laying some pipes or something…)
We have planted a variety of vegetables; many of them are Heirloom Varieties from Baker Creek Nurseries. Hopefully, we have planted enough vegetables to have enough to gorge on this summer, can & freeze a pile, and share with friends, family, & whatever wildlife happens upon our garden…
Below, you will find a list of the varieties we are growing On Burton Farm:
Tomatoes: Chadwick Cherry, Amish Paste, Moneymaker, Pink Brandywine, Abu Rawan, Cherokee Purple,
Peppers: Quadrato d’Asti Rosso, Pepper Fish, Sweet Peppers, Poblano, Tabasco, Pepperoncini, Cowhorn
Corn: Golden Bantam 12 Row, Wade’s Giant Indian, Cherokee Long Ear Popcorn
Beans: Mother Stallard Pole, Hidatsa Red Indian
Cucumbers: Miniature White, Marketmore 76, and Long Green Improved
and Fordhook Zucchini, Early Yellow Summer Crookneck Squash, Okra, Moon and Stars – Long Milky Way Watermelon, Minnesota Midget Melons, Blue Curled Scotch Kale, Golden Beets, Spinach.
I’ll share a map so you can see where everything went in…Next year, we will be more cognizant of companion planting. ~Erica

UPDATE:
2014: Bullcrap.
I found out I was pregnant again right after this Mother’s Day planting day. No wonder I was so exhausted. That poor garden dried up and wasted away, save a few lonely cucumbers.
2015: Forget it.
This year I had a newborn, a toddler, was juggling work between two offices, prepping a home for sale, buying the farm, moving and settling in to the new house. You people who manage to actually get things done with little kids around, you’re absolutely superhuman. I’m lucky I get out of the house with all of us wearing pants.
2016: I want to say I’m back
in the game. Still consider getting us all out of the house with pants on a “success.”

Our First Farm Egg!
When Clint went to the farm Saturday morning, he found this little jewel on top of the chicken townhouse…not in the safety of the overturned doghouse, not even under the shelter of the chicken townhouse…but…on top of it!
