Chicken Coop Progress Report – March 16, 2014

This is the overturned cast-away coop1bottom half of a plastic dog house that they’ve been sleeping in since we moved them out last month.  They’re so big now, that they can’t ALL fit in there!!

We HAVE to do something!

The chicken coop is a project we had planned on building in three stages. We have decided we are at a MUST BUILD point for the Pre-Permanent Coop.

We have acquired a full sized door, some used tin sheets to repurpose and Clint’s brother will be selling us some wood to build the coop. We will have to purchase the rest of the wood at Lowe’s because we cannot wait any longer to build their pre-permanent coop. This will be a small build, but way larger than they’ve grown accustomed to, that will eventually have another door installed to serve as a lockable storage unit inside the coop. Clint says it will be big enough to drag his sleeping bag into, if necessary, when he camps out at the farm and it rains, for instance, or is too cold, or the coyotes start circling him.

The four of us went out to the farm today for a little bit, took great pity upon their sleeping situation…and rigged up THIS beauty:coop2

Chicken Townhouses. That’s what’s up.

I know you guys are all going to want houseplans on this, but it’s kind of a custom order.

Little Boy on the Farm  – March 8, 2014

I can’t believeSting2 how big Sting is getting! He’s 13.5 months old here. He’s really into climbing things now; he climbed on and off of those chairs over and over!  Ohhhh, How we love this boy!

Hey, ALDOT: Can we get a driveway, or what?

Hungry Like the Chicken March 5, 2014

chickenI worked thru lunch today. And yesterday. And Monday, come to think of it. Ate a can of soup I had stashed away one day, had cheezits and hot tea another day, but by the time I got home, I was purt’ near ready to stand in my dinner, too!

This weekend was fun–I actually got to see how crazy the chickens go for fresh vegetable pieces and leftover meat (um, not chicken though…just for clarification). Really funny to see them wrangling a lamb bone and running around with it while the other ones chased ’em down (because there wasn’t another bone to be found? I want THAT bone? What?)

I meant to get a video of them going berserk, but I couldn’t watch my phone for watching them live and watching Sterling get excited about it. How fun this is!

Our “Before” Picture… (Kind of) March 4, 2014

Sooo, we’ve had the property since November, and Clint’s been clearing away trees and brush for Picturemonths and we’ve already moved the chickens to the farm…I realized I didn’t have any “before” pictures and I want something to compare our future to, so here, in all its glory from across the road, is our property:

Twenty five feet closer, and you can see what a great deal of progress has already been made:Picture

Clint lets a few chickens out when he goes to the farm, so they can peck around, get some extra exercise, fresh grass, whatever…All they do is circle the pen on the outside. I don’t know why that’s so funny to me.
